Basic Training in Ecological Sustainability for the Creative Sector
In spring 2025, the Luoto project organized a free basic training in sustainability for professionals in the creative industries. The training offered practical knowledge on topics such as the circular economy, carbon footprints, and sustainable digital practices. Produced by Kierrätyskeskus, the course included five expert-led webinars and a series of workshops. 1. Introduction to the Environmental Crisis & Circular Economy in the Creative Sector
Overview of the environmental crisis (climate change, biodiversity loss, growing consumption). Circular and sharing economy in the creative sector, material use, ecological perspectives as inspiration for developing operations, and case examples from different fields.

2. Accelerating the Societal Sustainability Transition Through Creative Content
How creative sector content can influence norms and practices, raise awareness, and inspire action for a sustainable future.

Integrating energy efficiency and environmental awareness into digital processes such as game design, digital publishing, and service design. Sustainability and ecological awareness as part of technological development.

4. Reducing the Carbon Footprint in Production and Event Processes
Identifying major emission sources and key areas for reduction – the “low-hanging fruit.” Tools and guides for calculating and reducing carbon footprints across different areas. Focus on transportation, food, and energy, and understanding which actions matter. Includes basics of carbon calculation, data collection, and tools to track progress. With case examples from the creative sector.

5. Launching, Embedding, and Continuously Developing Environmental Work
How to start and embed environmental work, and how to inspire your community. Tools for initiating sustainable practices and integrating them into your organization’s strategy and operations. Also focuses on leadership in sustainability, staff engagement, and the long-term development of sustainable practices. Includes how to create an environmental program and information on certifications.
