Info
Luoto.art is an online platform and knowledge base supporting the sustainability transformation in the creative industries. The website compiles tools, guides, and resources to promote ecological sustainability across the creative sector. It is based on the action plan developed within the Luoto project and provides support for strengthening sustainability practices for individuals and the sector as a whole.

The goal of the Luoto.art website is to serve all creative sector actors and those working on sustainability projects, and to establish itself as a central knowledge base for ecological sustainability tools and information. The site is based on the Ecological Sustainability Transition Action Plan for the Creative Industries, updated in spring 2025 through commissioned work by experts from various fields. The aim is to increase sustainability competence within the creative industries and to lower the threshold for taking action to slow biodiversity loss and the climate crisis. We need you – join us in creating solutions for the sustainability crisis!

Luoto Project
The Luoto project – the Action Plan for the Ecological Sustainability Transition of the Creative Industries – was implemented from 2022 to 2025, coordinated by the Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council. The project has been funded by Sitra, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Education and Culture, and the Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council (2022–2023), as well as through the Ministry of Education and Culture’s structural support for the renewal of the culture and creative sectors (2023–2025) – NextGeneration EU.
The project team has included Jaana Eskola, Pia Tynys, and Salla Lahtinen (Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council); Kati Nuora, Milla Martikainen, Saana Katila, and Markus Nordenstreng (Creasus ry – Association for Advancing Creative Circular Economy); Panu Sirkiä (Teatteripalvelu Taito Oy); and Jyri Sucksdorff (Cooperative Ziran). Background
Fostering Sustainability – Action Plan for Ecological Transition in Cultural and Creative Sectors was published in 2023. The action plan and its proposals are based on outcomes from Luoto workshops, close collaboration with sustainability projects in the creative sector, a preliminary study commissioned by Aalto University and Sitra in autumn 2022, and findings from the project’s implementation. The plan examines the societal influence of the creative industries in driving the broader sustainability transition and provides concrete recommendations for municipalities, regions, and funders, along with practical solutions to sustainability challenges in the creative field.
During the three-year Luoto project, the need to strengthen sustainability competence among professionals already active in the field has become increasingly clear. Often, support has been needed to launch environmental work – either through expert services (such as an eco-coordinator) or through additional resources to strengthen internal capabilities.
The second phase of the Luoto project (2024–2025) has addressed this need by offering continuing education for professionals in the creative sector, organizing networking events to support knowledge sharing, and establishing a mentoring system to promote peer learning and long-term development. The aim has been to create permanent structures that embed sustainability work into the everyday practices of the creative industries – both locally and nationally.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the project so far – the work to support the creative sector’s sustainability transition continues!
