Aalto University Develops Sustainable Solutions
Aalto University has integrated sustainability into its own operations, but its greatest impact lies in its multidisciplinary education, research, and new solutions for sustainable development.
At Aalto, sustainability competence is considered essential for anyone seeking to address today’s complex and systemic challenges. The university has been working strategically for years to embed sustainability throughout its activities. Aalto is committed to reducing its climate emissions across all sectors and aims to be carbon neutral by 2030.
Science, technology, and art play a central role in solving the planet’s sustainability crises. Aalto combines expertise in art, technology, and business to develop solutions for humanity’s greatest challenges, such as environmental crises. The university’s largest sustainability impact stems from its multidisciplinary teaching, research, and applied solutions for sustainable development, as well as its interaction with wider society.
Aalto generates knowledge, understanding, and solutions that enable wellbeing within planetary boundaries. Key research areas include material reuse, sustainable energy and mobility, water resources, and the sharing economy. Sustainability themes are present in the majority of Aalto’s courses.
At Aalto, sustainability competence is divided into four core areas. Sustainability knowledge provides both general and field-specific knowledge and skills. Systems thinking teaches how to analyze complex problems, their root causes, and systemic contexts. Futures thinking develops the ability to create sustainable future visions. Values thinking equips students to identify, define, and reflect on sustainability values.
